Suction filters are devices installed upstream of the hydraulic pump, directly on the suction line from the reservoir. Their main function is to trap coarse contaminants in the fluid, preventing immediate damage to the pump and extending its service life.
Traditionally widely used, modern hydraulic filtration strategies limit their application to cases where the fluid in the reservoir may contain significant initial contamination or where preventive pump protection is required. Overly fine filtration at the suction stage can cause pressure drops and impair the pump’s inlet conditions.
For this reason, suction filters are often combined with other filtration solutions, such as:
Filtering elements, replaceable to maintain long-term efficiency.
Pressure filters for downstream pump protection in medium and high-pressure applications.
Return filters to trap contaminants returned to the reservoir from the circuit.
Clogging indicators to monitor filter status and prevent late interventions.
Key benefits:
Direct pump protection from coarse particles.
Rugged design and simple maintenance.
Can be combined with return and pressure filters for a complete filtration strategy.
In heavy-duty applications or when filling fluids may be contaminated, the suction filter remains an effective choice, especially as part of a multi-stage filtration system.
